After that, Ragnar goes in search of new lands to conquer.

The Viking Age may have been over 1,000 years ago, but when we look at the popular cultures of the last few years, our obsession with seafaring warriors doesn’t seem to have stopped. You don’t have to look far to find books, TV and games spread out. We had Michael Hirst’s six-season epic series Vikings to chart the rise and fall of the era’s greatest warriors. Games like God of War and Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla have been hugely popular; And now the revival continues with the release of Robert Eggers’ acclaimed new film The Normanman.
In fact, the director has recently admitted that he has recovered this huge hit. The film tells the epic story of Alexander Skarsgård’s Prince Amlet, who is on a brutal path of revenge after his father is brutally murdered by his uncle. It depicts the beginnings of a young boy’s transition into adulthood before embarking on a quest to kill his father’s killer and save his mother. “I will avenge your father, I will save your mother, I will kill you Fjolnir,” his mantra is haunting.
The Northman is in UK cinemas ahead of its US release on 22 April. If the trailer left you wanting more Norse mythology, we’ve rounded up the best Vikings movies and shows to watch next. To Valhalla!
Vikings (#17 Of 27): Extra Large Movie Poster Image
History Channel’s Vikings is one of the most comprehensive shows of its time. Created by Michael Hirst, the show originally focused on Ragnar Lodbrok, one of the most famous Norse heroes, as he became the unknown king of Scandinavia after his invasion of England. The series evolves over six chapters, following the family’s fortunes as they spread across England, Scandinavia, Kievan Rus, the Mediterranean and North America. Many familiar faces will appear on the show, including Katheryn Winnick, Alexander Ludwig and Gustaf Skarsgård. Filled with focus on characters, lyrical scale and brutal combat, the series was a hit and even a spin-off – but more on that later.
The Last Kingdom is based on award-winning historical author Bernard Cornwall’s series of novels called Saxon Stories. It follows Uhtred, Alexander’s Dreamman of Bebanburg, who was a Saxon lord captured and adopted by a Danish warlord. The adaptation began life at the BBC in 2015 before being acquired by Netflix as it continues the 9th and 10th century story. It ran for five seasons and is widely considered one of the best historical dramas on the streamer. And if that’s not enough, there’s also a Seven Kings Must Die movie on the horizon.
Mads Mikkelsen directed this 2009 film with Drive’s Nicolas Winding Refn. The Danish adventure film follows a Norse warrior named One Eye (Mikkelsen) and his boy friend as they travel in search of the Holy Land. In the year Set in 1096, the couple soon find themselves on a different, and much darker, path. The film was generally popular with critics, who praised Mikkelson’s performance in the film Unfair. We gave it three stars when it was released and praised the film’s tone, saying it “keeps you in an expectant, uncomfortable situation”.
Vikings: Valhalla continues the story of the Vikings in a new show 100 years after the original. The Netflix series was created by Jeb Stewart to chart the beginning of the end for the Viking Age. The premise follows the tension between Christian and pagan beliefs between the Vikings and the English kings, focusing on new characters such as Leif Eriksson, Freydis Eriksdottir and Harald Hardrada. Season one is already available to stream, and two more series have been ordered by Netflix — and did we mention there’s plenty of brutality and horror in this latest story? The Lost Viking
While it’s a mile away from the other entries on this list, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention Norse mythology without mentioning Marvel. In the year The first Thor movie, released in 2011, introduced a new generation to the mythology by telling the origin stories of the god of thunder. Characters such as Odin and Loki will be introduced to Midgard, Bifrost and the Valkyries in the film, perhaps for the first time for a large audience. Although there hasn’t been much focus on the mythology since then, there’s been a lot of focus on the Thor movies, especially the wildly successful Thor: Ragnarok – and the wait won’t be long until Thor: Love and Thunder.
