Primatologist Davis (Dwayne Johnson) shares an unbreakable bond with George, the extraordinarily intelligent silverback gorilla who has been in his care since birth. When a greed-fueled corporation’s genetic experiment goes awry, George and other animals across the country are transformed into aggressive super-creatures that ravage the city. On an adrenaline-fueled ride, Davis tries to find an antidote to not only stop a global catastrophe, but also save the fearsome creature that was once his friend.

Critics Consensus: Rampage isn’t nearly as entertaining as its source material, but the film’s sheer abandon may satisfy audiences looking for a brainless blockbuster.

The Rock Und Sein Riesenaffe
Is a pleasant surprise, successfully translating a simple arcade game into a carnage-filled summer blockbuster. It helps that the premise of
— the movie and the game — is so basic: science experiment goes horribly wrong, giant mutated creatures ravage much of the United States.
The video game inspirations were obvious: what if Godzilla and King Kong (oh, and a really big wolf) wreaked havoc on Midwestern US cities, collapsing buildings and devouring people? That sounds fun. It’s apparently a solid starting point for a delightfully goofy movie that delivers spectacular destruction in yet another action vehicle for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
, Johnson stars as Davis Okoye, an oh-so-soft variation of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, only this time he’s a primatologist who shines more for animals than humans. Okoye’s best friend on screen is Kong’s stand-in George, an albino gorilla living happily at the San Diego Zoo until an unfortunate encounter with the aforementioned genetic experiment goes awry. George’s transformation from a playful, friendly gorilla to a giant, rampaging ape sends Okoye and genetic scientist Kate Caldwell (Naomie Harris) on a cross-country chase to end George’s rampage before the military can take him down.

Complicating Okoye and Caldwell’s mission are two other giant beasts that were mutated by the same genetic experiment: a wolf (with wings!) and a giant Florida crocodile.
Presents Okoye as an eminently sympathetic animal lover who avoids human relations. She commands the respect of her colleagues and the apes she cares for, and rejects the romantic advances of a fawning young zoologist in favor of dating a pair of dogs. We learn that as a former member of an anti-poaching task force, Okoye saw the uglier side of humanity, and while in the field, formed a close relationship with George.
Okoye is extremely capable (not to mention exceedingly brilliant) for a primatologist; not only can he navigate the social dynamic of the gorilla, but he’s also very useful with a grenade launcher and commanders no less
It lasts almost two hours. Johnson plays him with his brand of muscular confidence, to the point where his charisma seems almost superhuman. At one point, another character even refers to him as “his big lug” to show what a gentle and gentle giant he must be.
Rampage Review: Either The Dumbest Or Most Sneakily Genius Action Movie
Okoye’s rapiers come in the form of a mysterious G-man played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan—a self-described cowboy, complete with prominent belt buckle and mother-of-pearl-grip pistol—and the Wydens, a pair of brothers who they rule the evil mega-corporation that started this whole mess of genetically mutated monsters. Malin Akerman plays Claire Wyden, a cold executive who wants to control her giant pets, while Jake Lacy steals the show as her brother Brett. Lacy’s performance as the clumsy weasel brother contributes to some of the
The best non-action moments and his sharp comic relief stand out in a film where many of the one-liners don’t quite land.
Morgan seems to have had the most fun on set playing a smart tough fixer who delivers gems like “When science shits the bed, I’m the one they call to change the sheets.” But Akerman is also fun to watch, often through his delivery of evil executive dialogue.
Enormous computer-generated creatures, courtesy of Weta Digital, square off against the human cast. George, in particular, feels tangible and real, thanks in part to motion capture artist Jason Liles, who helps give the gorilla much-needed human traits to support his relationship and play off Johnson’s character.

; it’s all about reward. It’s not whether Chicago, the setting for the film’s biggest setting, will be destroyed, but how extravagantly it will be destroyed.
There are traces of humor in all that city destruction: it’s fun to see a team of cocky mercenaries chewed up by a bad wolf, and Naomie Harris’s character starts to poke fun at some of the on-screen machismo, though she’s underused. There’s even an inside joke or two

Arcade machine in his office, which raises some questions: Did he name his company’s genetic science project “Rampage” after the video game? Did the arcade win in recognition of Project Rampage? Is it just a coincidence in the name of inserting a reference to the classic Bally Midway game?
Is an awesome kind of movie, a surprisingly fun departure from King Kong Vs. Godzilla mutated through a video game filter. Although it took no less than four screenwriters to bring
For the big screen, it’s not a particularly thoughtful or complex film. Instead, things explode really well, fall really well, and there’s Rock. Enjoy the ride. “Rampage” is a $100 million adaptation of an 80’s arcade game. When was this movie made? Judging by the quality of the CGI, circa 2006, they put this 2018 film on par with Peter Jackson’s “King Kong.” Why was this movie made? Warner Brothers acquired arcade developer Midway for $33 million, and apparently didn’t want that investment to go to waste. How was this movie made? Throwing The Rock onto the screen and hoping his raw star power will reverse Hollywood’s idiotic decision to release yet another doomed video game movie.
“Rampage” is about a giant ape, a wolf and a giant crocodile (or alligator, more accurately speaking) destroying buildings and crushing extras.
