Maior Rodovia Do Brasil

Also known as Rodovia Transbrasiliana and Rodovia Belém-Brasília, it is the fifth largest highway in Brazil, with a total length of 3,585 kilometers, connecting the city of Marabá (PA) with the municipality of Acegua (RS). Along its entire route, BR-153 passes through the states of Pará, Tocantins, Goias, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, ending at the Brazil-Uruguay border. Between the municipalities of Marabá and São Domingos do Araguaia, BR-153 coincides with BR-230.

Projeto De Pavimentação Da Br 319 Ignora Regras E Prevê Entrega Em 2022

As of July 8, 2022, with the adoption of Law No. 14,396/2022, the highway in the section that includes the municipalities of Cachoeira do Sul (RS) to Maraba (PA) was officially named Rodovia Presidente João Goulart. The names Rodovia Belém-Brasília and Rodovia Bernardo Sayão apply only to the section between the intersections with BR-226 (Wanderlândia, TO) and BR-060 (Annapolis, GO). The highway was already called BR-14 until 1964. Between Frutal (MG) and Wanderlândia (TO), the BR-153 is part of the traditional road route connecting São Paulo (SP) with Goiânia (GO) and Belem (SHOVEL).

BR-153 is the main link connecting the Central North of Brazil (Tocantins, Maranhão, Para and Amapa states) with the Central-South geoeconomic region of the country. Due to this fact and added to the large traffic flow, BR-153 is currently considered one of the main national integration highways in Brazil. Some important Brazilian cities such as Passo Fundo (RS), Marília (SP), São José do Rio Preto (SP), Goiânia (GO), Anapolis (GO), Palmas (TO), Araguaína (TO), Imperatriz (MA) , Marabá (PA) and Belém (PA), use it as a main drainage corridor. It is also widely used to reach touristic areas such as Caldas Novas/Rio Quente (GO), historic Pirenopolis and Goiás Velho (GO), Araquaia River, Bananal Island, Tocantins River, Jalapao, Nature. Petrified Trees Monument (in Philadelphia, TO), Chapada das Mesas (in Maranhao), Lake Serra da Mesa (an artificial lake created by the construction of the Serra da Mesa hydroelectric plant) (in Goyas), Region do Contestado (Paranada and Santa Catarina), Marcelino Ramos, In addition to Piratuba and the surrounding thermal baths. Apart from these regions, BR-153 is also used as an access road to other important capital cities of the country, such as Brasília, Macapa (by ferry), São Luis, Teresina and São Paulo.

The sections between BR-376 (coffee road) and the city of Imbituva (PR) are still planned, not yet built. The section between Erechim (RS) and Passo Fundo (RS) is not paved, it is the last stage of paving in the southern region and is not yet completed (2021).

Officially, according to DNIT (National Department of Transport Infrastructure), the Ministry of Transport agency responsible for Brazilian roads, BR-153 starts in São Domingos do Araguaia (PA) and ends in Acegua (RS). According to the press service, it receives the name Transbrasiliana only in the state of São Paulo – this is wrong, because this name is also popular in Santa Catarina and Parana. Road maps and some official documents refer to the Aceguá-Belém Transbrasiliana route, covering about 2,800 kilometers of the famous Belém-Brazil route.

Both highways follow the BR-153 until the small Wanderlândia north of Tocantins. It then takes a detour to Maraba, while Belém-Brasilia follows the BR-226 and then the BR-010. In any case, the fact is that there is no consensus.

BR-153 has sections of greater or lesser quality/difficulty depending on several factors (some more or less permanent, others temporary). Unlike BR-101 and BR-116, it does not follow the coast where the majority of Brazil’s population lives, but instead stays inland and crosses Brazil from north to south.

BR-153 is one of the main access roads to the central region of Brazil, in addition to the Triângulo Mineiro region of Minas Gerais, it is a highway of great importance, especially for the states of Tocantins and Goias. BR-153 was built at a time when the state of Goiás (including present-day Tocantins) needed communication with the rest of Brazil, ie. its creation was decisive for the development of the region.

For a long time, the BR-153 was considered a very dangerous road due to its poor protection and detour route in the middle of the cerrado of Goyas. Today, its duplication between Goiânia and Itumbiara and in the southern region of Goias is completely finished. The federal government recently announced its intention to privatize this section of the highway once the dual carriageway is completed. In addition, most parts of BR-153 were restored through the same federal government program. The BR-153 urban loop passing through Goiânia (27 km) is responsible for 35% of accidents along the entire length of the highway.
