Cute Poster Boys: That’s how the three young Norwegians who stormed the pop charts were known as A-ha in the ’80s. The documentary “Aha – The Movie” tells a different story. Jenny Zylka finds it candid because it is rarely a documentation of the artist.

“Take Me” or “Hunting High and Low” or “The Sun Always Shines on the TV” – Norwegian A-ha topped the European charts in the 1980s with their sweet pop and poster faces. The band’s story, which still exists today, is now told in “A-ha – the Movie” — frankly and rarely told in a documentary about living artists, says critic Jenny Zylka.

The film is rather conventional: “We’re told about the band’s evolution in classic chronological fashion. There are childhood friends from Oslo, Pål Waaktaar-Savoy and Magne Furuholmen, who find different bands and countries until they find each one. As a singer, we’ll have golden boy Morten Harket, the guy The one with the magical three-octave voice and the brave star-cut face.”

The movie completely cleans up this poster boy image. Instead of smiling pop stars, we see “evil Norwegian bastards” who had music feuds, fought over copyright issues, and didn’t see each other either:

“Just sitting next to each other on the couch for the interview feels problematic for the three of them,” says Zylka. Magne’s wife says off-screen at one point: The three of them need therapy. Personally and as a band. And Magne also says later: Friendship wasn’t the basis of A-ha.

The resentment or love-hate relationship between the band members is also demonstrated by the fact that Pål Waaktaar-Savoy only speaks English in interviews, “to put distance between himself and others”, says the critic. “One wonders if they didn’t really enjoy it at all, not even at first when all the girls and women had it at their feet or the whole world.” The eighties aha! It was the beginning of a special friendship when Pål Waaktaar-Savoy and Magne Furuholmen met at the age of twelve and began making music together, full of dreams of international success. When British groups like Soft Cell, Yazoo and Depeche Mode became famous in the early 1980s, Pål and Magne – then the Teenagers – flew to London without a return ticket. In Norway at that time, such a thing was not only naive, but completely impossible. There has never been an international pop star from Norway.
